When I saw an article trending about a formerly cancelled Netflix show being brought back by fans petitioning I was curious to see what this show was. Warrior Nun was not on my watch list but I was out of shows to binge and decided to dive in over the 4th of July weekend.
I was pleasantly surprised.
All of the episode titles are named after scripture which I found…unusual even for a show with a somewhat religious theme. I haven’t consistently read the Bible in a long time and in many ways I’m still taking my healing journey with PTSD and religion one day at a time.
So Netflix offered me – an unconventional Bible study this weekend.
In the first episode we meet the main character Ava, who was formerly paralyzed since age 7 and being cared for over the last decade in a Catholic orphanage. It’s clear from the beginning that Ava does not have a relationship with the Catholic church or God, so the plot of the story immediately becomes interesting. The setting is definitely modern – probably meant to be 2020s based on some of the humor and social commentary in future episodes – but still in an alternate reality where tactical nuns exist. I’m talking if ninjas wore habits. So aside from that – the interesting part of the story is that Ava dies but is revived by a “halo” a religious artifact said to come from an angel who came to earth many years ago. She was revived by this halo that kind of fuses to her back by happenstance – the place where her body was found was attacked and the former nun who was the “halo-bearer” was killed. For safekeeping, another person hid it inside Ava. Spooky.
So back to the verse to kick things off. The scripture and the episode is meant to enforce that she is the Chosen One – the Harry Potter of this Warrior Nun franchise. Quite literally “God is within her” vis a vis the actual halo embedded in her which brought her back from the dead.
I’m excited to share the show and my thoughts for each episode along the way – truth be told I’ve already watched the entire first season and now I’m going back one by one to not only review but process the religious themes and experiences the show brings up.
